The film takes place in the 80's and 90's, and follows Monica and Quincy in their attempt to succeed in basketball. The comparisons of male and female roles are strongly emphasized and all the rules are broken. Prince-Blythewood has a powerful enthusiasm for basketball and a coherent, calm way of illustrating the discrepancies in public attitudes towards male and female athletes. While Quincy is loved and supported by his schoolmates and family, Monica is seen as somewhat of a freak for wanting the same thing.Watching this movie still instilled for me that the man, being Quincy, are the more dominant initiators of a relationship, but that Monica played a role in persuing Quincy after the end of their relationship. It is always said that it should be the guy that initiates everything in the relationship, and you rarely here about women proposing to men. However in this movie, Monica showed just how fearless her personality was by challenging Quincy to face his heart and rediscover that he really truly loves Monica and not his fiancé who was played by Tyra Banks. Monica engages Quincy in this basketball game playing for his heart, knowing that if he loved her he would allow her to win. It did not matter that she lost the first time, I think that was for suspense, because it all came together and we knew Quincy really loved Monica when he stops her from walking away saying, “double or nothing.” I think in my own life I see women being a bit more bold in relationships is something I tend to do, whether that be calling out things blatantly or being verbal when I do not feel like I am being loved or appreciated. I think in terms of conflict it is not a bad thing like it is often depicted, but can actually strengthen couples relationships. When I would say is different about Monica and myself is that in my head chasing after a guy like that would bring up the fear in the back of my head that I manipulated him into choosing me, and not him choosing me out of his own will. I seem to struggle with the end where Quincy was all set to marry this other beautiful girl and then leaves it all to ultimately marry Monica because that is who he truly loved. Yet if he truly loved her than why did he leave her in the first place and seemingly settle for another girl? Why would Quincy ultimately just go back to Monica when he could have worked to be with her all those years they lost contact? Though I am absolutely no expert in relationships, I would encourage more communication in defining the relationship and disclosing emotions that are being felt to each other. I believe that communication is key to making a relationship work, no matter what the relationship may be.In the midst of March Madness, while cheering for my favorite women’s basketball teams, I decided to revisit a new novel by Rita Rashad. This is her second creative work in a trilogy that she calls “love series”. Her book, Love, Lies and Basketball details the intimate life and loves of three main characters. Ms. Rashad's first book was, Love At Half-Court and the final book due out this summer is, Love Don't Cry.
