He advised us that journals like the British Journal of Sociology and Psychiatry were sympathetic to qualitative, intellectual essay-type articles and were therefore a good outlet for publications. He emphasized that we always need a detailed description of the structural context of a given sociological item, because it is the structural context which determines whether a given structural arrangement or mechanism does or does not satisfy a given functional requirement. Geertz’s later emphasis () on “thick description” is quite compatible with Merton’s endorsement of detailed description as an essential part of functional analysis.
