Text analysis is difficult. As with any difficult assignment, do not expect students to enter into the process alone. Most importantly, do not sell your students short. I know of some teachers who have no faith in their students’ abilities to analyze text whatsoever. They may attempt a different strategy to jump start the process, but their lack of faith taints their attitude which in turn affects the students.
Annotating is easy and beneficial to writing a well developed essay. The directions state what is expected of a well-developed response to the text analysis essay. Take note of what is important such as the structure of the essay being 2-3 paragraphs, the task of identifying the central idea in the text and analyzing how the author uses ONE writing strategy to develop the central idea. Also incorporate strong evidence from the passage and DON’T SUMMARIZE THE PASSAGE!

I'm glad! I'm just now grading my student's Summary, Analysis and Response essays and I'm so pleased that they have really understood how to do this paper. I'm hoping my directions this semester have been clearer. We did two days of peer editing, which I think helped.
